Public MK kart race organised for Wheldon

Public MK kart race organised for Wheldon

7 November 2011

A Dan Wheldon tribute kart race for has been organised, set to run on Monday 5 December. The event will take place at the Daytona Milton Keynes karting centre, located approximately ten miles from the family home of the Englishman who lost his life in a multiple-car accident during the Las Vegas IndyCar finale last month.

Organised by Johnny Mowlem, long-time friend of Wheldon and a successful sportscar driver, the event is expected to attract a selection of familiar motorsport faces including 2009 F1 Champion Jenson Button, three-time IndyCar Champion Dario Franchitti, WTCC contender Robert Huff and Peugeot Le Mans driver Anthony Davidson, friends of the 33-year-old who has survived wife Susie and two children.

“I just wanted to put together an event to honour Dan,” says Mowlem. “Aside from raising funds for one of the family’s chosen charities, I wanted to bring together people who knew and raced with Dan to have some fun in his honour and give him a send off he would have been proud of.

“The event has the full support of Dan’s family and his dad and brothers will be taking part and share in the evening. I hope members of the public will also appreciate the opportunity to take part and remember one of Britain’s most successful and charismatic Champions.”

In a further bid to honour the 2005 IndyCar Series Champion, who won the Indianapolis 500 in 2005 and this year, members of the public will be able to take part across 25 to 30 teams of four people – each team will include a professional driver and three members of the public.
