Alesi confirms Newman/Haas as Indy 500 team
5 April 2012 – Legendary outfit Newman/Haas will be the team with which Jean Alesi makes his Indy 500 debut this year. The French-Sicilian, who retired from Formula 1 at the end of the 2001 season, confirmed his participation last September but did not name a team.
“I realise that it will not be easy,” said the 47-year-old, who picked up two F1 pole positions, one victory and 32 podium finishes over a 201-race career. “I will have to give a lot and work hard on my fitness for the qualifying and race which is ahead of me.”
Newman/Haas has achieved a selection of accolades in American racing, although this year it is contesting only the Indy 500 as opposed to a full IndyCar career. In the now defunct Champ Car series, it enjoyed success with Mario and Michael Andretti, Nigel Mansell, Cristiano da Massa and Sébastien Bourdais.
