Barrichello granted extra practice time

10 April 2012

Rubens Barrichello has received a special dispensation to extra track time in the IndyCar Series, starting with this weekend’s round at Long Beach. The Brazilian will now be able to join other rookie drivers in an extra half hour of practice running.

When he entered the championship, officials ruled that Barrichello would was allowed the extra time for oval tracks, but that his vast Formula 1 experience meant he should not enjoy the same allowance on more standard, road courses.

His team, KV Racing, argued that the road course bonus time should be allowed and, following a review, series organisers have added Barrichello to the main rookie practice list. The only exceptions will be circuits on which he has already tested.

“For street courses that can be difficult to learn, he (now) has the benefit of that extra set of tyres and extra 30 minutes of practice to learn the track quickly and get down to business,” explains Beaux Barfield, IndyCar’s Competition President.

After two IndyCar events in 2012, Barrichello’s best result so far is eighth place, recorded last time out at the Barber Motorsports Park near Birmingham, Alabama.
