Elkhart Lake’s Road America has been named as a conceivable replacement for the cancelled Chinese round of this year’s IndyCar Series. The race was supposed to host Round 16 of the championship and organisers are now striving to make sure the calendar does not lose an event.
“I got stopped every ten feet on Friday and Saturday by people wanting to know if I knew where Road America was or if we were going to be there in August,’’ IndyCar CEO Randy Bernard is quoted as saying by Speed TV. “I told them I knew exactly where it was and that it was high on our list.”
The Wisconsin track has an ALMS (American Le Mans Series) race scheduled for Saturday 18 August, but the Sunday remains an option for IndyCar.
“It’s pretty late and we’ve already started selling tickets, but we’re looking at it and I’ll be talking to Randy this week to see if we can work something out,” explains George Bruggenthies, President and General Manager of Road America. “If we could do it, we would run Indy cars on Sunday.”
The IndyCar Series is currently led by Australia’s Will Power, who at the halfway point of the season holds a 31-point point advantage over James Hinchcliffe of Canada.
