Filippi secures IndyCar series test outing
27 July 2013 – Luca Filippi is to take part in next week's IndyCar Series Open Test at Mid-Ohio for Barracuda Racing, with regular driver Alex Tagliani stepping out of the cockpit for the remainder of the season as the team prepares to evaluate its 2014 driver options.
Filippi, a veteran of the GP2 Series, finished second in the 2011 championship, and is a former Formula 1 tester with Honda. Having seen initial plans to make his IndyCar debut with Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing at the Indy 500 dashed, the Italian will finally have his chance to impress in the top echelon of American single-seaters.
"We're taking this opportunity to evaluate our program as we look toward the future," said team co-owner Bryan Herta. "It makes sense at this point to look at the available pool of drivers that may fit into our future plans. We want to thank Alex for being a team player and we look forward to seeing what Luca can do during the test in Mid-Ohio."
Filippi, 27, said of the upcoming test: "I've been working and waiting for a chance like this my whole life. I can't wait to test the No. 98 Barracuda Racing car and hopefully make the most of this opportunity to learn first-hand about IndyCar racing."
The Mid-Ohio test takes place on 31 July, with the full event following on August 2-4.
