Hunter-Reay claims Mid-Ohio pole
3 August 2013 – Ryan Hunter-Reay will start from pole position in the Honda 200 at Mid-Ohio on Sunday, the Andretti Autosport driver posting a 1:05.352 to edge out Penske’s Will Power. Scott Dixon took third, nearly half a second behind the session-topping time.
Hunter-Reay had led his group in round one, which saw several big name drivers, including championship leader Helio Castroneves, eliminated. Luca Filippi, who was making his maiden IndyCar appearance, posted a time good enough to progress to the second round, but had it chalked off as punishment for a spin at Turn 12 which brought out the red flags. The Italian will now start from the last row of the grid in his debut race.
As the fast six commenced, Dario Franchitti staked an early claim for top spot, while Marco Andretti, Power and Dixon elected to save their runs until late in the session. Hunter-Reay eclipsed the Scott’s time with one minute left on the clock, and was to stay there until the chequered flag flew. Power claimed second, 0.184s behind, with Dixon and Andretti sharing the second row. Charlie Kimball, who suffered a heavy crash in morning practice, was next up in an impressive fifth, while Franchitti eventually ended up back in sixth.
Sunday's race at Mid-Ohio gets underway at 20:40pm British time.
