Aleshin secures Schmidt IndyCar seat
22 November 2013 – Mikhail Aleshin has secured a seat with Schmidt Peterson Motorsports for the 2014 IndyCar campaign, meaning he will become the category's first Russian driver.
Aleshin, who won the Formula Renault 3.5 crown in 2010, tested the team's Dallara-Honda for the first time at Sebring last weekend, and will race alongside Simon Pagenaud next season.
"The last two or three years I've been looking in this direction and at one point in the middle of the 2013 season I decided that I just needed to change something," said Aleshin.
"My main sponsordecided it would be a good idea to try something in the U.S. because there are no Russian drivers at this level, and considering the experience I have we thought it would all come together."
He added of his decision to join the team: "I chose Schmidt Peterson Motorsports for many reasons, but the most important thing was that I saw a team with great potential. I understood that these people are really aiming for victory and it's very important for them."
