Ganassi: Franchitti to cast positive shadow
20 December 2013 – Mike Hull, Chip Ganassi Racing's Managing Director, says he expects Dario Franchitti to "cast a major positive shadow" on the team in future seasons, following the Scot's forced retirement from motor racing.
Franchitti, a four-time IndyCar champion and three-time Indianapolis 500 winner, reluctantly called time on his career in the wake of a final lap crash at Houston, which left him with spinal fractures and a broken ankle.
He recovered sufficiently to address the media on Thursday, during which time he thanked members of the IndyCar community for their continued support, and is now preparing for life off the track.
"Dario's shadow for us is massive," said Hull. "What he provided for our team – not only what he was able to do on the racetrack – but his ability to utilize a partnership among his team-mates.
"Being a team-mate is one of his strengths. When you have a team-mate with such historical significance as Dario has, he'll cast a major positive shadow on Chip Ganassi Racing for the rest of our lifetimes together."
Hull added that he is eager to find Franchitti a suitable role within the team moving forward.
"Hopefully we'll have Dario with us [as a member of the team]," Hull explained. "I don't think full time is what he had in mind. We think he can make a very positive contribution toward how we race in the future."
