Tweaks to Indy 500 practice, qualifying
15 April 2014 – IndyCar has added a practice session and tweaked qualifying for this year's Indianapolis 500.
The fresh qualifying format, outlined by organisers last month, will see entrants secure their place on the 2014 grid on Saturday May 17, before the full starting order for the blue-riband event is determined the following day.
But in another change to the regulations, drivers who "suffer a hardship" at the end of Saturday's running will be given a pass to the race, although they will be forced to start from the back of the traditional 33-strong grid.
The extra practice day to aid teams with race preparation has been scheduled for May 19, after qualifying.
