Power quickest in first Indy 500 practice
12 May 2014 – Will Power headed a Penske 1-2-3 in the opening practice session for the Indianapolis 500.
The Australian, who holds the championship lead, set the standard with a best average lap speed of 223.057 mph, ahead of team-mates Juan Pablo Montoya (222.502 mph) and Hélio Castroneves (222.373 mph).
"It's great to be at the top of the charts," said Power. "The car felt really good too, and we did quite a few laps."
J.R. Hildebrand was the first non-Penske driver in fourth, ahead of Andretti's Ryan Hunter-Reay and E.J. Viso.
Tony Kanaan, winner of the race last year, finished 10th fastest, two spots ahead of NASCAR's Kurt Busch.
Jacques Villeneuve, making his return to the blue-riband event this year, wound up in 14th position.
Ahead of the session, Sage Karam completed his rookie orientation, clearing him to continue in the event.
