Carpenter claims pole position for Indy 500
19 May 2014 – Ed Carpenter has claimed pole position for the Indianapolis 500 for the second year running.
Carpenter was the only driver to average over 230mph during his four lap run, clocking 231.067 mph.
Andretti driver James Hinchcliffe and Penske's Will Power are to join Carpenter on the front row of the grid on Sunday, with Hélio Castroneves, Simon Pagenaud and Marco Andretti forming the second row.
Carlos Muñoz, Josef Newgarden and J.R. Hildebrand complete row three and the top nine positions.
Juan Pablo Montoya will start from 10th position, alongside Scott Dixon and NASCAR's Kurt Busch.
Tony Kanaan, who triumphed 12 months ago, starts 17th, with the returning Jacques Villeneuve 27th.
