Castroneves tips Newgarden to boost Penske
8 January 2017 – Hélio Castroneves believes the arrival of Josef Newgarden at Penske will spur the team forward, after hailing the quick manner in which the American has adapted to his new surroundings.
Newgarden has joined Penske after spending five years with Sarah Fisher Racing and Ed Carpenter Racing, taking three wins, and a career-best fourth in the 2016 standings.
Penske finished 1-2-3 in last season's championship, with Castroneves trailing Simon Pagenaud and Will Power, as the team collected 10 victories from 16 races.
Despite Penske's superiority, Castroneves reckons Newgarden's presence will drive the team forwards even further.
"First of all, he's [part of] a new generation," Castroneves is quoted by the official IndyCar website.
"Josef has been able to show – I wouldn't say a small team but one not comparable to Penske – victories, potential and good results.
"I feel the first test we had together, I was very surprised that he was able to adapt very quickly to the team, to the setups and to the cars. He was extremely fast.
"So, I feel that we're going to have another young guy here pushing us, but it's always good to have quality drivers around us because it helps to make us better as well.
"He was extremely fast and we want to know why, so let's take Josef and put him in our group and hopefully make it happen."
Newgarden, 26, has replaced Juan Pablo Montoya for the full season at Penske, though the Colombian will compete in a fifth Penske-run car at the Indianapolis 500.
