Alonso has 'much better feeling' with car
16 May 2017 – Fernando Alonso described a "much better feeling" with his car following the first day of practice for the Indianapolis 500, in which he placed 19th overall.
Alonso, having dashed from the Spanish Grand Prix, topped the early rookie and refreshers session, before being joined by the rest of the field for official practice.
Alonso's best speed came in at 223.025mph, 3.3mph down on pace-setting team-mate Marco Andretti, the Spaniard's day ending prematurely due to an apparent rear suspension issue.
"It was definitely a much better day, a much better feeling," Alonso declared.
"I was a little bit concerned about the conditions, the temperature – it was much hotter than the test we did here on the 3rd, but the car felt good, it felt as good as in the test.
"I was able to make some set-up changes without losing confidence in the car, so everything went very smoothly, until the last half an hour, when we had some issues with the rear suspension.
"Overall it was an amazing day and I'm happier than the first day with the car, because I was able to feel some of the set-up changes that we were playing with in the morning.
"I had not much running in traffic, so I need to go through in the next couple of days, but I did two or three laps behind some cars that were going out of the pit lane, and that was good fun."
Alonso also described a smooth transition between F1/IndyCar machinery.
"It took one corner, it was OK!" Alonso commented with a wry smile.
"I think with the test we made on May 3, you switch on quite quickly.
"You jump in the car, you are in that seating position that is different to F1, you have this head rest where you have no movement to look right left – you just remind yourself what you were driving.
"So it took no really no time to switch from one to another."
Indy 500 practice will continue at 12:00 local time on Tuesday.
