Alonso get first taste of running in traffic
17 May 2017 – Fernando Alonso hailed a "productive" second day of practice for the Indianapolis 500, as he finally experienced high-speed running in traffic.
Alonso made his oval debut on May 3, as he worked through the mandatory Rookie Orientation Programme alone, before official practice began on Monday.
On his third day at the wheel, Alonso focused on gaining confidence in traffic, working alongside his five Andretti team-mates.
"It felt OK, it felt as I expected; obviously it's very important to keep close to the car in front of you, to take the benefit from the next straight – it was useful.
"I'm on the best team for that; we are six cars and we were running together.
"My team-mates were amazing [in] helping me. I knew they were taking care of me in some moments of the run, so that was good and yeah, [it was the] first time for me.
"[I was] learning every lap here and there, you know, when I follow them, learning what they do, how they attack the next corner or the next lap, how they prepare the overtaking."
Alonso ended the day 24th on the speed chart with a best lap of 221.029 mph, while he racked up 117 laps, the most of anyone in the field.
"It was a very positive and productive day," he summed up.
"We did a lot of laps, a lot of learning, some group running, finally with some traffic, so it is information I will sleep on and be a better oval driver."
