18 May 2017 – The 101st running of the Indianapolis 500 will commence in 10 days' time when 33 cars line up at the Motor Speedway. GPUpdate.net takes a look at the preparations for this year's running of the prestigious race.
The focus has so far been on Fernando Alonso, McLaren and Andretti, amid the unexpected collaboration between three iconic parties.
McLaren has returned to Indianapolis for the first time in several decades, while Alonso is aiming to become the first full-time active Formula 1 driver to triumph at the 500 since Graham Hill.
Alonso completes laps during practice at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, caressing the No. 29 McLaren-Andretti into Turn 1.
Mario Andretti, the father of team founder Michael, whose own son Marco is one of Alonso's team-mates, remains a popular figure, and has hailed the Spaniard's presence at the event.
Michael Andretti watches on from the pit wall, having run Alexander Rossi to last year's win.
Rossi, with the Herta-affiliated Andretti outfit, emerges for practice laps, as he bids to add a second victory to last year's fabulous triumph.
Two-time runner up (2013, 2016) Carlos Muñoz has switched to Foyt as he chases a maiden win.
Oval specialist Ed Carpenter, who runs his own eponymous team, was quickest on the third day of practice.
Three-time victor Johnny Rutherford, acting as an ambassador for McLaren, with whom he took two of his wins, tries out Alonso's cockpit for size.
Alonso and his team run through pit-stop practice, opposite the imposing main grandstand.
All eyes will be on the black-helmeted No. 29 car when the race begins in 10 days' time.
