Allan McNish has been awarded for his contribution to motorsport by the RAC (Royal Automobile Club) in London. The Scot, who proudly picked up the 2008 Segrave Trophy in Pall Mall, has been awarded for what the group has described as an 'exceptional endeavour in motorsport'.
Last year's winner of the legendary Le Mans 24 Hour race, McNish - who raced in Formula One with Toyota in 2002 - follows in the steps of F1 greats Stirling Moss, Jackie Stewart and Nigel Mansell in receiving the honour, which has also been collected by motorcycling hero Barry Sheene and Andy Green, current holder of the land speed record.
The gong is named after Henry Segrave, the only man in history to have held the land and water speed records simultaneously, having broken three speed records on land and being the first person to ever travel at 200 mph (321.8 km/h).
"Jackie (Stewart) told me that this is probably the highest honour any racing driver could be given and I am beginning to understand what he means," said McNish as he collected the prize, which is handed to those for outstanding achievements on land, water or in the air. Segrave, original holder of the record, was killed whilst attempting to better his efforts on Lake Windermere in 1930; lying in hospital after the capsizing of boat Miss England II, Segrave was told that he had beaten his own record before passing away due to lung haemorrhages.
