Abu Dhabi targets MotoGP event

11 March 2010

With the Middle East set to launch the season once again this year, with the Grand Prix of Qatar kicking proceedings off on 11 April, Abu Dhabi also hopes for a place on the MotoGP calendar with its new-for-2009 Yas Marina track.

With Yas Marina having hosted the final round of last year's Formula 1 season, the brand-new circuit now hopes to welcome MotoGP to the venue as Qatar plans to attract F1.

"MotoGP boss Carmelo Ezpeleta was here last year and track designer Hermann Tilke will be coming up with a proposal in the next couple of weeks," Richard Cregan, CEO of Abu Dhabi Motorsports Management, explained to the Khaleej Times. "We are looking at a time frame of maybe two to three years, when Abu Dhabi will be able to hold a MotoGP round.

"MotoGP is one thing which I'm very passionate about and I would love to see MotoGP coming to Abu Dhabi in two to three years' time, it would be fantastic. The Abu Dhabi Tourism Authority has brought the World Rally Championship candidature event to Abu Dhabi, with the aim of becoming an official WRC event in 2011; and with a MotoGP race, Abu Dhabi will become a real hotspot for motorsport."
