Bautista aiming to be 'Rookie of the Year'

7 April 2010

Álvaro Bautista hopes to confirm himself as the highest-placed newcomer this year as the Spaniard approaches the start of his first MotoGP season. The Suzuki rider steps up to the top class for 2010 and brings with him the 2006 125cc title as well as the runner-up prize from last year's 250cc (now Moto2) competition.

Although Suzuki team-mate Loris Capirossi starts his 300th race in Qatar this weekend and is therefore likely to be the man of the moment, Bautista understands the significance of the upcoming night race at Losail.

"For me this is a very important weekend because it will be my first race in MotoGP," he began. "I have done okay in testing but racing is a different thing. I still have to learn about the bike and about MotoGP very much because it is so different from 250, so I must keep focussed and take everything as it comes.

"A target for this year would be to be rookie of the year but that will be difficult because there are so many good riders and the racing will be close. I must learn step-by-step and not do anything stupid in the early races. I am really excited about my debut for Rizla Suzuki and just can't wait to get racing!"
