Victoria extends Australian MotoGP contract

31 May 2010

Officials in the Australian state of Victoria confirmed on Sunday that a MotoGP race will continue to be hosted until at least 2016. The event, staged at Phillip Island, has seen off competition from New South Wales.

With Phillip Island - approximately 90 miles from Melbourne - hosting its 2010 race in mid-October, word had suggested that Sydney could take the country's Grand Prix although Victoria is thrilled to re-sign with MotoGP commercial rights holder Dorna Sports.

"We are delighted to be announcing the contract extension," said Drew Ward, Chief Executive of the event.

"The Australian Motorcycle Grand Prix is regarded as one of the best events on the MotoGP calendar and we are very much looking forward to October."
