It was the Repsol Honda bikes of Dani Pedrosa and Andrea Dovizioso which led the way in first practice for the San Marino Grand Prix at Misano on Friday afternoon. In fact, the symmetry continued throughout the top eight as the duo were followed by pairs of factory Yamahas, Tech 3 Yamahas and the works Ducatis.
Currently second in the championship but a large 67 points behind compatriot and leader Jorge Lorenzo, Pedrosa continued where he left off at Indianapolis by setting the early Misano best of 1:34.772, a significant six tenths up on Dovizioso and seven quicker than Lorenzo – the first none-Honda runner, who in-turn edges out Valentino Rossi by a tenth.
Colin Edwards is the leading Tech 3 rider, ahead of team-mate and factory team-bound Ben Spies, with 2006 Champion Nicky Hayden finishing the session ahead of title successor Casey Stoner at Ducati. Behind, Marco Melandri was best of the rest on the Gresini Honda as the Suzuki of Loris Capirossi completed the top ten.
Although Lorenzo finished the session third, the Mallorcan looked to have stolen the top spot before Pedrosa – two minutes before the chequered flag - followed by Dovizioso – seconds after the chequered flag - moved one and two for Honda.
Saturday’s second free practice session begins at 9:55am local time (BST +1)
