Melandri confirmed by Yamaha in World Superbikes

6 September 2010

Shortly after the Gresini Honda MotoGP team released a press release stating that it will be parting company with Marco Melandri at the end of the current season, it has been confirmed that the Italian will be racing for the title-winning Yamaha Sterilgarda World Superbike team in 2011.

After enduring what has been a trying 2010 with Gresini, which he rejoined at the start of 2009 following three more successful seasons between 2005 and 2007, 28-year-old Melandri now makes the switch from MotoGP to WSR.

“I'm very happy with this new challenge - it's a big change and I want to fight for world superbike wins,” he said, having won five times in MotoGP.

“It's nice to be back with Yamaha. I know many people there; I was very young when I rode with them before, now I'm much more mature. As the reigning 2009 Champions, they have proved to have a very competitive package and are one of the top teams in World Superbikes.”

However, Marco admits that the career move will be no easy feat.

“I realise Superbikes is not easy and I know I have to work hard,” he began to sum up. “I'm looking forward to feeling the adrenalin again and fighting for the championship.”
