Only two competitors set lap times in opening practice for Sunday’s Portuguese Grand Prix, with the returning Friday morning session having been hit by appalling conditions which left the circuit barely rideable.

Estoril’s round marks the penultimate race weekend of the season although schedules could be compromised if the weather remains the same.

Gusting winds and heavy rain were already on offer as the session began, with the weather only deteriorating as the majority of bikes remained firmly rooted to their garages.

Apart from Interwetten’s Hiroshi Aoyama and Pramac’s Carlos Checa, who were the only two riders to register lap times, Aleix Espargaró and Hector Barberá also toured the saturated circuit briefly.

Second practice is scheduled to begin at 2:05 pm local time (BST)
