Colin Edwards put his Tech 3 Yamaha machine at the top of the timesheets during the warm-up session in Portugal on Sunday morning, leading the way with a time of 1:46.727, over seven tenths ahead of Repsol Honda rider Casey Stoner. Seven-times World Champion Valentino Rossi claimed third, almost a full second adrift of the fastest time.
The field had to battle with damp track conditions to begin with, but a drying track surface allowed for Edwards to storm to the front. Nicky Hayden and Marco Simoncelli were next up behind the top three runners, while pole-sitter Jorge Lorenzo ended his time on-track in sixth place.
Dani Pedrosa settled for seventh during the 25-minute session and will be hoping for less aggravation from his shoulder this afternoon, with the Spaniard recently undergoing an operation to remove a metal plate. Eighth place was occupied by Cal Crutchlow, just ahead of Hiroshi Aoyama and Ben Spies who completed the top ten.
