After taking the spoils in the first Barcelona practice session on Friday morning, Honda’s Casey Stoner has retained the top spot this afternoon. The Australian again led the way from Marco Simoncelli as Andrea Dovizioso moved into the top three, with Jorge Lorenzo waiting before running under dry conditions in the final 15 minutes.
Some two seconds quicker in the wet stage of the session, Stoner’s eventual best effort of 1:42.940 edges out Simoncelli by half a second, with Dovizioso confirming that both works Hondas finish in the top three. Injured team-mate Dani Pedrosa is not competing as he recovers from a broken collarbone.
Lorenzo’s short appearance included the fourth best lap time, with Ben Spies rounding out the top five on the other factory Yamaha. In respective 10th and 12th places, Álvaro Bautista and Randy de Puniet both unexpectedly topped the timesheets during the session, as the weather continued to change on an unseasonably chilly day in Catalonia.
With other Spaniards Toni Elías and Héctor Barberá 11th and 15th, Briton Cal Crutchlow managed seventh once again as Tech3 team-mate Colin Edwards took a tumble at Turn 5, the SEAT hairpin; removed from the scene on a stretcher, the American was treated for a shoulder injury at the circuit medical centre before being transported to hospital.
Third and final practice begins at 10:10am local time on Saturday (BST +1)
