Marco Simoncelli posted the fastest lap in this morning’s first practice session at Mugello, with the Italian stealing the top spot in front of his home supporters. The Gresini rider completed a time of 1:48.987 in the final few moments, ending the session just ahead of Repsol Honda’s Casey Stoner and Andrea Dovizioso.
Pleasant weather conditions greeted the drivers this morning, with lots of mileage being completed by the 16-strong field. Reigning Champion Jorge Lorenzo was best of the rest behind Dovizioso, while Assen winner Ben Spies completed the top five. Fellow American Colin Edwards was next up in sixth place, just ahead of Dani Pedrosa who is returning from injury.
Factory Ducati rider Nicky Hayden took eighth place at the end of the session, edging out Hiroshi Aoyama who has returned to the Gresini squad. Álvaro Bautista was the final top ten runner, three places ahead of Valentino Rossi who suffered a technical problem.
