Repsol Honda rider Andrea Dovizioso topped the timing screens during a rain-affected second practice session at Mugello this afternoon, posting an effort of 1:49.272 to finish over 2.5 seconds ahead of Toni Elias. Italy’s Valentino Rossi claimed third after venturing out for a small number of laps, with the seven-time Champion eager to move on from his technical troubles in first practice.
Four of the biggest names failed to set a time as the rain fell this afternoon, with Jorge Lorenzo, Dani Pedrosa, Casey Stoner and Marco Simoncelli all preferring the dry surroundings in the pit lane. Suzuki’s Álvaro Bautista grabbed fourth after completing only four laps, finishing over seven tenths ahead of Randy de Puniet who completed the most mileage out of all 16 runners.
Héctor Barberá was almost ten seconds away from pace-setter Andrea Dovizioso as the session came to a close, putting his Aspar machinery just ahead of Cal Crutchlow who is continuing to recover from a broken collarbone. Nicky Hayden set the ninth quickest time, while Hiroshi Aoyama rounded out the top ten.
