Gresini rider Marco Simoncelli led the way during this morning’s warm-up session at Mugello, posting a time of 1:48.430 to edge ahead of Repsol Honda’s Andrea Dovizioso by just six thousandths of a second. Pole-sitter and championship leader Casey Stoner occupied third, lapping the 5.245-km (3.259-mi) circuit four tenths slower than his pace-setting effort in qualifying.
A dry track surface saw all bar one rider make it under the 1:50.000 barrier, with fastest man Simoncelli just over 2.5 seconds ahead of Toni Elias who finished at the bottom of the order. American Ben Spies set the fourth quickest time ahead of workd Yamaha team-mate Jorge Lorenzo, while Dani Pedrosa delivered another encouraging performance to grab sixth place.
Nicky Hayden was the leading factory Ducati rider once again, outpacing Colin Edwards at the end of the session. Valentino Rossi made it into the top ten after his struggles in qualifying, claiming ninth on the timesheets ahead of Hiroshi Aoyama.
