Reigning Champion and factory Yamaha rider Jorge Lorenzo moved ahead in the second practice session at Laguna Seca this afternoon, outpacing his rivals with an impressive effort of 1:22.056. Spaniard Dani Pedrosa was second quickest again, leading Repsol Honda team-mates Casey Stoner and Andrea Dovizioso.
Home favourite Ben Spies had to settle for fifth on the timesheets this time out, trailing team-mate Lorenzo by more than half a second at the end of the 45 minutes of track action. Marco Simoncelli occupied sixth in front of Álvaro Bautista, with Randy de Puniet just under a tenth further back in eighth place.
America's Colin Edwards did just enough to place his Tech 3 machine ahead of fellow countryman Nicky Hayden, while the latter's works Ducati team-mate narrowly missed out on a place inside the top ten.
