Reigning World Champion Jorge Lorenzo has posted the quickest lap time in Friday’s second practice session leading up to the San Marino MotoGP. The Yamaha rider, who could muster only sixth in this morning’s first 45-minute period, led the way from the Hondas of championship leader Casey Stoner and compatriot Dani Pedrosa.
As humidity levels soared, drops of rain began to fall in the closing minutes although the session was chiefly dry once again. Lorenzo’s best lap came on his tenth tour and in the form of 1:33.929 – 1.2 seconds fastest than he managed this morning.
With Stoner – the pace-setter of earlier – now a full second down, two Hondas remained in the top three with the Gresini bike of Marco Simoncelli improving to fourth; this left Andrea Dovizioso to slip down to sixth behind the quicker Ben Spies.
Ducati were once again marooned in 11th and 13th positions for Valentino Rossi and Nicky Hayden, with the Tech 3 machine of Coventry’s Cal Crutchlow 15th. Loris Capirossi was 16th fastest on what is the first race weekend since announcing that he is to retire from racing at the end of the 2011 season.
