Lorenzo takes controlled Misano win

4 September 2011
2011 San Marino MotoGP Grand Prix: Sunday race results

Reigning Champion Jorge Lorenzo has won Sunday’s San Marino MotoGP in convincing fashion, leading home Dani Pedrosa by over seven seconds. Denied a career-first fourth consecutive win, championship leader Casey Stoner came home third as Italians Marco Simoncelli and Andrea Dovizioso completed the top five.

From pole, Honda’s Stoner looked to lead into the first corner although the leading Yamaha muscled through and was never headed for the remainder of the race. Stoner dropped to third on Lap 22 courtesy of a pass from team-mate Pedrosa, with the Australian’s championship-leading advantage therefore decreasing to 35 points.

An aggressive ride from Simoncelli saw the Honda Gresini man recover three positions after plummeting to seventh at the get-go, finally forcing ahead of Dovizioso on the final lap. The second Yamaha of Ben Spies, which had started fourth, quickly caught the battling countrymen and was preparing to pass before being slowed into the last corner.

It was a mixed race for local Misano favourites Ducati. Although Nicky Hayden crashed out on Lap 3, Valentino Rossi’s start saw the multiple title winner zoom from 11th on the grid to fifth by the end of Lap 2. Overhauled by Simoncelli two tours later and Yamaha replacement Spies on Lap 15, Rossi ended the day in seventh place.

There was also disappointment for Loris Capirossi in what was the first race since announcing his retirement from racing at the end of the 2011 season, with the Pramac rider pulling into the pits on the ninth lap.

Round 14 takes place at Spain's MotorLand Aragón in a fortnight's time
