2011 MotoGP Grand Prix: Friday first free practice results

Dani Pedrosa has topped the timesheets in first practice for this weekend’s Aragón MotoGP. The Honda rider led the way with a best effort of 1:50.281, edging out compatriot Jorge Lorenzo by half a second as championship leader Casey Stoner completed the top three on the second Honda.

Lorenzo led the way with five minutes remaining, only for Pedrosa to move ahead in the dying moments. Stoner, who won at the Spanish track for Ducati last year, was some six tenths down on his team-mate as Italians Simoncelli and Dovizioso completed the first five for Gresini and Repsol Honda, respectively.

Valentino Rossi ran a new aluminium chassis at Ducati, replacing the previous carbon fibre version; although he suffered two off-track excursions, the multiple title winner elected to retain the latest specification for the remainder of the session, finishing eighth and two tenths of a second slower than team-mate Nicky Hayden.

On the Tech 3 bike, Coventry’s Cal Crutchlow posted the 13th fastest time, two and a half seconds down on the leading pace.

Practice 2 begins at 2:10pm local time (BST +1)
