Casey Stoner stayed atop the timesheets in Friday’s second practice session for the Australian MotoGP, with the championship leader’s factory Honda a very comfortable four tenths of a second quicker than the Gresini bike of Marco Simoncelli. With Yamaha third and fourth, Jorge Lorenzo was six tenth down on his title rival.
Unlike this morning, Stoner remained on-track for the duration of the session en route to registering his best lap time of 1:30.535. Team-mate Dani Pedrosa improved by one spot to round out the top five as the third bike of Andrea Dovizioso fell to tenth, behind Hiroshi Aoyama, Randy de Puniet, Álvaro Bautista and Colin Edwards.
Ducati also appeared to fall back, with Nicky Hayden still the lead bike in 11th as Valentino Rossi endured 14th place, behind the second Tech 3 machine of Britain’s Cal Crutchlow which ended the period an improved 1.4 seconds off the leading pace.
