Casey Stoner continued to dominate the build-up to the Australian MotoGP by setting the pace in third and final practice on Saturday morning. The home rider, with a best lap time of 1:30.550, led the way from reigning Champion Jorge Lorenzo’s Yamaha and the second works Honda machine of Dani Pedrosa.
Following his controlled pace on Friday, Saturday morning saw Stoner – with an improved bike – top the timesheets by a remarkable margin of over six tenths of a second, with title challenger Lorenzo simply unable to respond.
Marco Simoncelli managed fourth for Gresini Honda, with the second Yamaha of Ben Spies completing the top five. Nicky Hayden was ninth for Ducati as the struggles continued for team-mate Valentino Rossi, in only 12th spot.
Three places behind Britain’s Cal Crutchlow was second Australian Damian Cudlin, although the Pramac replacement for Héctor Barberá crashed early at Turn 2 and was subsequently ferried to the medical centre for treatment to a light hip wound.
Qualifying at Phillip Island begins at 2:55pm local time (BST +10) on Saturday
