After dominating all three practice sessions as in 2010, Casey Stoner has clinched pole position for his home Australian MotoGP. The Honda rider will share the front row with reigning Champion Jorge Lorenzo plus Marco Simoncelli and could win the 2011 World Championship title at Phillip Island on Sunday.
Having been in control all weekend-long, Stoner easily topped the timesheets with his rapid effort of 1:29.975, which beat Lorenzo by almost half a second.
In the event of scoring ten more points than the Spaniard on Sunday, Stoner will celebrate a second world title – after 2007 – on his 26th birthday.
The second factory Honda of Andrea Dovizioso will set off from fifth spot, with Nicky Hayden managing sixth for Ducati after an early-session off. However, Álvaro Bautista greatly impressed by sealing fourth for Suzuki. On the third Honda, Dani Pedrosa struggled and could muster no more than eighth position.
Valentino Rossi’s miserable weekend for results continued with only 13th on the second Ducati, one place ahead of Coventry’s Cal Crutchlow, as Pramac’s Damian Cudlin – replacing the injured Héctor Barberá – missed the 107 percent cut-off time following his accident in final practice this morning.
Sunday morning's warm-up session begins at 11:40am local time, with the Australian MotoGP following from 4pm local time (BST +10)
