Dani Pedrosa comfortably topped the timesheets in Friday’s first practice session for the Malaysian MotoGP, leading the way from Honda team-mates Casey Stoner and Andrea Dovizioso. Behind the World Champion entries was another Honda, of Marco Simoncelli, as Álvaro Bautista and Suzuki were best of the rest.
With a best effort of 2:01.916, not only was Pedrosa quicker than the first non-Honda bike by a massive 1.6 seconds, but six tenths ahead of title winner Stoner. Further back, Ben Spies was the leading Yamaha representative in sixth as injured Jorge Lorenzo was replaced by Katsuyuki Nakasuga, who was 17th fastest of the 18 bikes.
Valentino Rossi was this time ahead of Ducati team-mate Nicky Hayden, as the pair filled positions ten and twelve respectively, with John Hopkins’ wildcard entry on the Suzuki making 14th spot.
Lapping only four times was Héctor Barberá, before heading directly to the circuit medical centre; the Mapfre Aspar man is being checked over following surgery on his fractured collarbone, who was damaged a fortnight ago.
Practice 2 at Sepang starts at 2:10pm local time (BST +7)
