Dani Pedrosa could not be knocked off the top spot as the second MotoGP practice session was staged in Malaysia on Friday afternoon. With his best effort of 2:01.250, the Catalan again led a works Honda one-two-three, with Gresini bikes occupying positions four and five but the highest-placed factory Yamaha only ninth.
With remarkable pace, Pedrosa could not be beaten by World Champion team-mate Stoner, who was a staggering eight tenths of a second off the leading pace. Behind what was a top five lockout for the Hondas, Colin Edwards managed sixth for Tech 3 Yamaha as the still impressive Álvaro Bautista’s Suzuki fell to seventh.
There was a respectable performance from Czech Karel Abraham, who managed tenth place on the Cardion AB machine, as Ducati could manage no more than 11th and 13th positions with Nicky Hayden and Valentino Rossi. Still recovering from his fractured collarbone, Héctor Barberá struggled his way to the penultimate position.
It was a tough day for Yamaha’s Katsuyuki Nakasuga, who is standing in for Jorge Lorenzo; the Japanese suffered offs in both sessions and ended the day at the bottom of the timesheets, 2.6 seconds down on team-mate Ben Spies. Coventry’s Cal Crutchlow finished his afternoon in 15th place on the second Tech 3 entry.
"Today we went pretty fast and consistent, even though the track wasn't very clean," said pace-setter Pedrosa. "We did a good job in both practice sessions, but I would like to improve a little more on the chassis side to feel more comfortable with the front and choose the right tyre for the race distance.
"At the moment we are making good steps but we need to keep on working with the same style and try to preform well tomorrow in qualifying; we had a bad qualifying in Australia and we want to be stronger here and do it better."
Third and final practice begins at 10:10am local time (BST +7) on Saturday
