Simoncelli’s funeral taking place in Italy

27 October 2011

Thursday will see the funeral of MotoGP rider Marco Simoncelli, who tragically lost his life after the shocking accident in Sunday’s Grand Prix of Malaysia.

When exiting Turn 11 at Sepang, the 24-year-old lost control, drifted back across the racing line and was hit by Colin Edwards and close friend Valentino Rossi, who were both unable to avoid the Honda Gresini rider.

On Tuesday, Simoncelli’s body was flown back to Rome’s Fiumicino airport on-board the same Alitalia flight which carried his father, Paolo, and the aforementioned Rossi. Yesterday, a public viewing of Simoncelli’s body resulted in huge queues of mourners from 10am until late in the evening, with famous faces such as former rider Marco Melandri and ex basketball player Walter Magnifico attending.

Simoncelli’s funeral will take place from 3pm today at the Santa Maria Assunta church in hometown Coriano, where he will later be buried. Two large screens will be set up outside the church for the viewing public, with another at the nearby Misano circuit.
