Ivan Silva posted the fastest overall practice time at Jerez on Friday, with the second round of this year's MotoGP campaign kicking off at the Spanish venue. During a wet morning session, it was largely a CRT bike affair as the top teams stayed indoors.
Despite a flurry of activity in the afternoon, no one could eclipse Silva's time, meaning the Avintia Blusens rider holds the quickest effort of the weekend so far. The Spaniard was also dramatically faster than anybody else in the morning, meaning a host of riders were able to slot into the time gap behind him later in the day.
The fastest of those men was Repsol Honda's Dani Pedrosa, topping the second session and ending the day second fastest behind Silva. Valentino Rossi showed promise in the damp conditions by placing his factory Ducati just behind Pedrosa on the timesheets, while Jorge Lorenzo rounded out the top three.
Britain's Cal Crutchlow finished 9th fastest on the combined timing screens for Tech 3 Yamaha, with compatriot James Ellison occupying 20th position.
Saturday's third and final practice session begins at 9.10am local time (GMT +1)
