Stoner tops second Silverstone practice session

Stoner tops second Silverstone practice session

15 June 2012

Casey Stoner ended a drying Silverstone practice day on top for Repsol Honda, posting an afternoon time of 2:04.791 to lead Ben Spies by just 0.034 seconds. The Australian, who was fourth on a damp track this morning, took advantage of the improving conditions and seemingly struggled less with his recent 'chatter' problem.

With the Northamptonshire venue offering much more grip, the initial opening practice benchmark from Valentino Rossi was beaten by a massive 14.537 seconds. The familiar faces of Álvaro Bautista and Nicky Hayden followed Stoner and Spies, while Stefan Bradl and Andrea Dovizioso both ended their days in the top six.

Championship leader Jorge Lorenzo, who currently has a 20-point advantage over Stoner in the standings, wound up seventh, with home favourite Cal Crutchlow eighth quickest. Dani Pedrosa and  Héctor Barberá completed the top ten runners, while Valentino Rossi slipped to 11th after setting the pace this morning.

Saturday's third and final practice session begins at 10.10am local time (BST)
