Lorenzo fastest in opening Assen practice
28 June 2012 – Championship leader Jorge Lorenzo led the way as MotoGP moved to The Netherlands on Thursday. Topping the first practice session at Assen for Yamaha, the 2010 title winner was followed by factory Honda pairing Dani Pedrosa and Casey Stoner.
With Lorenzo holding a championship advantage of 25 points, this weekend marks the start of a crucial run for his rivals, with Assen being the first of three consecutive races. Although the area has been subject to overcast conditions of late, the sun was shining.
Lorenzo was not sitting back, soon posting his fastest lap time of 1:35.106. Just behind, Pedrosa not only edged out Stoner but looks to be a genuine threat to his pace-setting compatriot, missing out on the top spot by just two hundredths of a second; however, Stoner was held up by traffic on his last two flying laps of the session.
With Ben Spies confirming a top four shutout for Yamaha and Honda, Ducati’s charge was led by Nicky Hayden in fifth, with team-mate Valentino Rossi’s struggles continuing as he completed the top ten. Cal Crutchlow also slotted into that particular group, notwithstanding his fractured ankle, as Randy de Puniet was the quickest CRT runner.
The second Assen practice session begins at 2:10pm local time (BST +1)
