Stoner claims stunning Assen pole position

29 June 2012

Casey Stoner produced an incredible late flying lap to claim pole position for Saturday's Dutch TT at Assen, eclipsing Repsol Honda team-mate Dani Pedrosa with a time of 1:33.713. Championship leader Jorge Lorenzo was next up, while Britain's Cal Crutchlow continued to impress in fifth, despite a broken ankle.

Mixed weather conditions shaped the qualifying hour, with intermittent rain looking set to prevent any improvements after the first round of laps were completed. However, a late dry spell allowed Stoner to jump all the way to the top of the timesheets from a distant ninth, putting him in the ideal position for Saturday's 26-lap race.

Stefan Bradl put in one of the best performances of the day, splitting Lorenzo and Crutchlow to take fourth place, while Yamaha's Ben Spies wound up sixth. Andrea Dovizioso and Álvaro Bautista were next up in seventh and eighth respectively, while the Ducatis of Nicky Hayden and Valentino Rossi rounded out the top ten.

Saturday's race begins at 2pm local time (GMT +1)
