As MotoGP left Assen on Saturday, there was a tie for the championship lead between Jorge Lorenzo and Casey Stoner. The current title holder, who won the Dutch TT from team-mate Dani Pedrosa, took full advantage of Lorenzo’s accident at the first corner.
With Álvaro Bautista having made a sluggish getaway, the Gresini man flew into the opening turn from several hundred metres further back, duly losing control and sliding into Lorenzo. The contact resulted in a heavily smoking Yamaha bike and a naturally furious Mallorcan.
Furthermore, having still been in pain upon returning to Barcelona, Lorenzo has been treated in hospital and doctors claim that he was fortunate not to suffer a broken ankle.
As a result of the unexpected drama, the pair of latest World Champions are now drawing level atop the standings on 140 points. Pedrosa’s second place at Assen has also allowed him to close in on Lorenzo and the gap back to third place overall is now 19 points.
The campaign continues with two more consecutive race events, in Germany and Italy.
