In conditions very different to those of Silverstone for Formula 1, Dani Pedrosa topped the timesheets as MotoGP track action commenced in Germany on Friday. At the Sachsenring, the Honda rider led the way from team-mate Casey Stoner.
Basking in sunshine, Pedrosa made the most of things with his best effort of 1:22.357, edging out his joint championship leading team-mate by less than one tenth of a second. In third place was the man who shares the title race advantage with Stoner, Yamaha’s Jorge Lorenzo.
Both Tech 3 bikes made the top five, with Andrea Dovizioso ahead of Cal Crutchlow but the Englishman still riding with a fractured left ankle. Nick Hayden again led the Ducati charge, from seventh place, as Valentino Rossi struggled to only 11th position. Becoming used to being the fastest CRT bike, Randy de Puniet finished 12th overall on the Aspar machine.
In the pit lane, there was an usual incident as Speed Master’s Mattia Pasini took a tumble while avoiding a mechanic; he landed on his head but was declared fit enough to continue running in the session. Also hitting trouble was Aleix Espargaró, team-mate to the aforementioned de Puniet, who crashed at Turn 10.
The Sachsenring’s second practice session starts at 2:10pm local time (BST +1)
