Pirro fastest in mixed conditions at Sachsenring
7 July 2012 – Gresini Honda rider Michele Pirro surprised many by topping the timesheets in the final practice session ahead of the German Grand Prix in Sachsenring. The track saw a mix of wet and dry conditions, causing several big names to spend the session in the garages.
Championship leaders Casey Stoner and Jorge Lorenzo both opted not to run, along with Britain’s Cal Crutchlow.
Pirro set his fastest time of 1:30.692 during the final stages of practice when conditions were at there best. Fellow CRT rider Mattia Pasini also set a late time to finish second, with Nicky Hayden finishing the session in third.
Andrea Dovizioso was fourth ahead of Pramac's Hector Barbera, while the factory Yamaha of Ben Spies was sixth in front of Franco Battaini who replaces the injured Karel Abraham.
