Yamaha's Jorge Lorenzo began his Mugello weekend in the strongest of ways by posting the quickest time in this morning's first practice session, setting a benchmark time of 1:48.131 to lead second place man Casey Stoner by more than half a second. Dani Pedrosa completed the top three, fresh from signing a new Repsol Honda deal.
Clear skies greeted the thousands of fans who flocked to the circuit this morning, with Ducati's Nicky Hayden giving the local contingent something to feel positive about. The American wound up fourth on his Desmosedici machine, edging ahead of Tech 3 Yamaha duo Cal Crutchlow and Andrea Dovizioso with his personal best effort.
Home favourite Valentino Rossi was next up in seventh place, showing promise on the second works Ducati. Héctor Barberá and Ben Spies finished eighth and ninth respectively, while promising rookie Stefan Bradl rounded out the top ten.
