2012 San Marino MotoGP Grand Prix: Friday first free practice results

CRT rider Danilo Petrucci topped a wet first practice session at Misano on Friday morning, leading the way with a time of 1:43.178. The Ioda Racing rider was one of just nine men to set a time throughout the 45 minutes of track activity, with Americans Ben Spies and Nicky Hayden the only prototype competitors to complete laps.

Early morning rainfall ensured a very slippery track surface when the pit lane opened at 10.10am local time, a situation that persuaded title rivals Jorge Lorenzo and Dani Pedrosa to refrain from venturing out. They were joined by the majority of the prototype field, with Italy's Petrucci and his fellow CRT riders shaping the timesheets.

Michele Pirro wound up second behind compatriot Petrucci, with Britain's James Ellison a couple of seconds further back. David Salom completed 12 laps en route to fourth, with the prototype machines of Spies and Hayden completing the top six. Yonni Hernandez, Mattia Pasini and Colin Edwards were the only other men to set a time.

Second practice gets underway at 2.10pm local time
