Ducati's Nicky Hayden led the way as practice for the final round of this year's MotoGP season commenced at Valencia. The American, whose personal best effort was clocked at 1:44.485, finished directly ahead of Dani Pedrosa and Jorge Lorenzo.
As the green light illuminated at the end of the pit lane, the rainfall increased and created a slippery track surface. Late in the session, Britain's James Ellison and Katsuyuki Nakasuga - the replacement for the injured Ben Spies - both slid off their bikes, becoming the main victims of Valencia's unpleasant weather conditions.
Andrea Dovizioso finished best of the rest behind the top three men, edging out home favourites Álvaro Bautista and Aleix Espargaro. Departing Ducati rider Valentino Rossi wound up seventh, with Cal Crutchlow and Randy de Puniet close behind. Casey Stoner began his final MotoGP event by posting the tenth quickest time.
Second practice begins at 1.10pm local time (GMT +1)
