Dani Pedrosa topped the timesheets at Sepang on Tuesday, with the first official test of the season getting underway. The Spaniard, who posted a personal best time of 2:01.157, led Yamaha's Jorge Lorenzo and Respol Honda team-mate Marc Márquez.
With less than half a tenth of a second covering the top three riders at the Malaysian Grand Prix venue at the end of the day, it was a competitive start to the first collective test of 2013. After Márquez set the pace in the morning session, 2012 title rivals Lorenzo and Pedrosa moved to the fore, with the latter ultimately coming out on top.
Valentino Rossi wound up fourth on his official return to Yamaha, exactly 0.427 seconds down on Pedrosa's pace-setting time. Stefan Bradl and Cal Crutchlow were fifth and sixth respectively, while Nicky Hayden led the factory Ducati effort in tenth. British Moto2 graduate Bradley Smith finished 12th, just ahead of Andrea Dovizioso.
