Casey Stoner impressed during his four-wheel motor racing debut this week, with the Australian contesting the first round of the Dunlop V8 Supercars development series in Adelaide. The 27-year-old has made the switch after his decision to retire from MotoGP last season, a championship he left with two world titles to his name.
Stoner quickly adapted to his new surroundings by qualifying 12th for the opening race at the Clipsal 500 event, but was the first man of the year to retire after a front-right tyre blow-out on Lap 13. Although this left him at the back of the grid for the second race, he fought his way through a field of 30 participants to finish 14th.
"We were pretty happy with the way we went," Stoner explained after his introduction to the series. "We couldn't get the car working right yesterday but today the car was definitely a bit better and I felt more comfortable with it Hopefully with time, things will start to come but honestly, I just want to have a bit of fun."
"Everyone was really good to race with, everyone gave racing room and I had a few battles there. It was very, very enjoyable and I wish we had another race tomorro. But unfortunately that's it for the weekend."
Stoner went on to admit that although he is adapting well to the category, there is plenty to learn about four-wheel racing after almost a quarter of a century on bikes.
"I had a real taste for it yesterday and in general, we've now got more of an idea," Stoner added. "Things I thought I was going to be nervous about, I'm more OK with than I thought I'd be. There are still a lot of things going on in the cockpit and that's going to take me a long time to understand after 24 years learning about bikes."
