Franco Uncini, the 1982 500 World Champion, made his debut as the FIM’s Grand Prix Safety Officer at the Circuit of the Americas this week. The Italian, who secured his new role last month, was joined by Javier Alonso, Managing Director of the Events Area at Dorna Sports, for an inspection of the track ahead of next week’s private test.
Following the review, MotoGP's governing body has requested more openings between guardrails, the installation of extra fences and the removal of certain kerbs.
"It was nice to begin in my new position as FIM Grand Prix Safety Officer at a track as spectacular as this," Uncini explained. "I like Circuit of the Americas and the facilities are really impressive: it’s picturesque, modern, technical, difficult, challenging and interesting. We should be seeing some good races in April because the corners allow for no respite for the riders and should deliver plenty of overtaking."
Respol Honda, Yamaha and LCR Honda will attend the private test from 12-14 March, with the Austin venue hosting the second round of the championship on 21 April.
